In realization of the directives of His Highness the President of UAE, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan –May Allah protect-, and through the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and at the course of providing basic food stuff to assist the brotherly people of Somalia to overcome their difficult life circumstances and provide the required support to those harmed by famine and drought and as part of the humanitarian initiatives and efforts exerted by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the initiative of “Year of Giving - 2017”, the Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charity and Humanitarian Establishment dispatched essential food supplies through its delegation visiting Somalia to provide much needed relief to victims and supervise the distribution of some 360 tons of humanitarian aid to 4600 victim families in famine and draught stricken Somali villages. The relief efforts are fully coordinated with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and UAE Embassy in the Somali Capital Mogadishu.
In immediate response to His Highness President of the UAE Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s directives – May Allah protect him- to provide urgent humanitarian relief to famine and draught victims in Somalia; following the footsteps of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (May Allah grant him forgiveness) to assist brotherly and friendly states during times of crises, and as expected from the Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment, the Establishment was prepared to execute the urgent humanitarian relief campaign.
“A delegation from the Establishment consisting of Director Saleh Zaher and Relief and Foreign Assistance Officer Mohamed Ahmed Al Hamadi flew to Somalia and headed, immediately upon arrival to Somali territories, to execute coordinative measures to distribute food supplies to beneficiaries in Harjisa region which includes the governorates of Jibili, Artoul, Ailabo, and Laftet Tein nearly 64 kilometers off Harjisa where there are large numbers of victims. The relief efforts are coordinated with partners of the Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment, including the governmental Somaliland Drought Committee,” said His Excellency Counselor Ibrahim Bou Melha Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment.
Bou Melha added that the relief distributed on 4600 families with an average household of 6-8 persons included essential food supplies, with each family receiving 25 kilos of rice, 25 kilos of flour, 25 kilos of sugar, 3 liters of cooking oil, two 2.5 kilo cans of infant milk, and 8 kilos of dates to cover the basic food needs for these families for a complete month. Bou Melha noted the relief comes at a critical time with the approach of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment had made a preliminary allocation of AED 5 Million to execute a number of humanitarian relief projects to help millions in Somalia suffering from acute food shortages and victims of famine. The Establishment set up an emergency operations room to study the best methods and mechanism to ensure the quick dispatch of humanitarian relief with full cooperation with and support from the UAE Embassy in Mogadishu.
